A tour to the Hallig Oland

In September 1989 we went to the Hallig Oland for a weekend. A "Hallig" is a small island in the North Sea, that is not surounded by a dyke. Only the houses are build on a "Warft", a small hill with a dyke. We drove from Dagebüll on the mainland over the dam toward the Hallig. The dam can be seen in the upper left leading to the Hallig, and then in a wide right turn passing the Warft and leaving the Hallig in the lower left toward the next Hallig.

Hallig Thumb out in the sea, you see the Hallig Oland

With the Hallig Express, the only vehicle with a roof we drove over the app. 5 kilometer long dam. This vehicle is the only one with a roof, and a reverse gear.

Hallig Thumb ...the Hallig Express brings us over from the mainland. But we also used the economyclass...

The other vehicles are a wee bit mor fresh to drive with. They don't have a reverse gear, so you have but two options when reaching the end of the track. Either to turn the entire vehicle around, or...

Hallig Thumb ...which is a bit more fresh. Those vehicles are mostly custom build by the inhabitants of the Hallig...

...only the motor is turned around. To do so, you have to turn the spill down until the belt falls free, then take out those bolts, or like here the screwdriver, lift the motor, turn it around and fix it again like it was before. Then you turn the spill again, and as soon as the belt is thight you start driving again.

Hallig Thumb The motor is fixed with some loose bolts or screwdrivers, and the belt fastend with the spill.

Twice each day the dam is washed over by the tide, and no traffic is possible. On the app. 5 km track is one siding for passing oncoming traffic. There are some tools that should be onboard at all times...

Hallig Thumb Twice the dam is washed over by the sea. And sometimes you need some toools...

a track gauge, a few spikes and a big hammer. Sometimes the track gets loose and out of gauge. Then you have to repair it, before you can drive on.

Hallig Thumb ...a big hammer, a few spikes and a gauge. Then you can drive on towards the horizon an on behind..........
